TN not affected by recession: Stalin

Chennai, Tamil Nadu has not been affected by the global recession as several companies are setting up their units in the State, Deputy Chief Minister M K Stalin said today.

Speaking after inaugurating a new road facility in SIPCOT IT Park at suburban Siruseri, he said companies like TCS, Xansa, Cognizant, Hexaware and Syntel had formed Special Economic Zones and set up facilities in this IT Park with an investment of Rs 7,000 crore.

He said 490 acre of land had been allotted to 70 industrial units in this park. Of this, 20 units had set up their facility with an investment of Rs 10,000 crore and commenced production.

”About 30,000 people have been provided direct employment in these units and about 70,000 have got indirect employment,” he said, adding construction work was in progress in respect of 35 units in the park.

Mr Stalin said TCS had established an IT Park with an investment of Rs 2,000 crore, which was the biggest one in Asia.

”In the first instance, employment opportunities were provided to 10,000 people. Once the IT Park commences its full operation, additional 25,000 people will get direct jobs,” he added.
