Shillong, The Steering Committee Against Murder of Democracy (SCAMOD) today called off their proposed two-day road blockade after talks with Chief Minister D D Lapang.
(SCAMOD), an umbrella organistion of 14 NGOs, had demanded that Director General of Police Anil K Pradhan be removed after being indicted by the administrative enquiry for allegedly dropping all criminal charges against Mr Thomas Nongtdu of Congress accused of financing the ”jailbreak” on May 31.
Mr Lapang held talks with the agitating NGOs in presence of his senior Cabinet colleagues and assured them that the Cabinet would study the Administrative report of PBO Warjri, Principal Secretary (Home) and take action accordingly.
” The Cabinet is yet to study the report. Once the Cabinet sits, a decision would be taken on the report, ” Mr Lapang told reporters.
In his 13-page enquiry, Mr Warjri accsued Pradhan of influencing his juniors to drop all charges against Congress politician Thomas Nongtdu, alleged to have financed the May 31 jailbreak. Mr Pradhan, however, denied the charges.
After the report was made public, the NGOs demanded the immediate removal of Mr Pradhan and gave the government a three-day deadline to remove him.
The deadline expired on July 23 and then the NGOs had called for a two-day road blockade from tomorrow beginning 1900 hours and ending the next day at 0500 hours.
Meanwhile, Mr Lapang said the government had ordered a judicial inquiry into the jailbreak headed by Gauhati High Court judge Justice (Retd) D Biswas.
” We need to be patient and that’s what I have asked the NGOs also. The Judicial inquiry would be transparent and then action would be taken against those found guilty, ” Mr Lapang added.
