Kathmandu, Eight years after the royal palace massacre, Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal has said a fresh probe into the incident was necessary to unearth the real cause, local media reports said here today.

”A new probe into the royal massacre should be initiated. But, at present, my priority is to draft the country’s new statute on time,” The Himalayan Times quoted PM Nepal as saying while speaking at a programme in Narayanhity palace.

Nine royal members, including the entire family of then king Birendra, were murdered in the dinner party which was blamed to have been carried out by then crown prince Dipendra.

Mr Nepal was also a member of the probe committee but he had declined to hold the position.

The royal massacre led to the abolition of monarchy as Gyanendra took over power after the massacre and became so unpopular that the Maoists and the mainstream political parties joined hand together to abolish the 240-year-old monarchy from the Himalayan nation.
