Bangalore, Portrayal of crime and violence in Kannada films was the highest in south and had been steadily increasing, thereby becoming cause of concern for the society, regional officer of the Central Board of Film Certification, A Chandrasekhar said today.

Talking to newspersons here, Mr Chandrasekhar, who completed his five-year=term, rued that the percentage of crime and violence based films in Bangalore since last five years was very much high, as compared to Chennai, Mumbai, Hyderabad and Thirvuananthapuram.

However, the percentage showed a decline in 2008 due to strict policy adopted by the Board, as the percentage in 2004 was 15.3, as against 9.4 in 2008. The obsession among the producers, of having violence in films needed to be tackled more effectively, he added.

Giving an overview of the Board’s function in the last five years, he said there had been a steep increase in number of films made in the region with 191 films certified with U, U*, UA, UA* A and A* categories. There had been a steady increase in the percentage of films certified without cuts and the figure hovered around 50 in last three years, as against the highest figure of 87 per cent in 2007 in Mumbai, he added.

Mr Chandrasekhar also said quality awareness among the cinegoers was very high and they were demanding quality content in films.

The board’s strict policy against violence and obscenity was a contributing factor to the high increase in success rate in 2006, he said, adding flooding of below average films in 2007-08 accounted again for decline in quality and the increased cuts in 2007-08.
