Passenger arrested with drugs at NSCBI Airport

Kolkata, A passenger bound for Bangkok was held at NSCBI Airport yesterday for carrying 10 kg of Ketamine Hydrochloride, a sedative, without documents, to customs officials said today.

The 23-year-old resident of Chennai had hidden the chemicals inside a soup-warming pot. The chemical is available in India for used in pharmaceutical industry in India, especially in veterenary medicines and is not a banned item, a customs official stated.

”The crystal powder looking like sugar is used as a sedative by youngsters mostly in south-east Asia and China. It is one of the four drugs used for this purpose,” a customs official told UNI today.

In India, it is legally available at Rs 35,000 per kg, but it is sold illegally in the international market at Rs 10 lakh per Kg, they said, adding smugglers generally take it to Malasiya via Bangkok from where the drugs find their way to China and also to some African countries.

On June 15, another resident of Chennai was held at NSCBI Airport with about 16 kg of Ketamine, he was bearding a flight while for Bangkok.

This kind of chemical can be carried abroad only after obtaining a ‘no objection’ certificate from the narcotic bureau at Gwalior, it was learnt.
