Islamabad, Pakistan has expressed concern over induction of nuclear submarine by India, saying, ”continued induction of new lethal weapon systems by New Delhi is detrimental to regional peace and stability”.

”Pakistan believes that maintenance of strategic balance is essential for peace and security in South Asia,” a Foreign Ministry statement said here last night.

It said that without entering into an arms race with India, Pakistan will take all appropriate steps to safeguard its security and maintain strategic balance in South Asia.

Meanwhile, the Pakistan Navy feared that the recent induction would trigger an arms race in the region.

A spokesman for the Navy said in a statement here that ”induction of a nuclear submarine into the Indian Navy is a destabilising step that will jeopardise the security paradigm of the entire region”.

”This move of the Indian Navy would have far-reaching effects not only on Pakistan, but also on the entire littoral states of the Indian Ocean and beyond”.

He said it could also trigger a nuclear arms race in the region, adding that all the littoral states, including Pakistan, will have to take appropriate safeguards.

He said the decision to develop a nuclear submarine was to be taken by the government and not by an individual. He said the Pakistan Navy would be ready to implement whatever the government decided in this regard.
