New Delhi, Two people were roasted alive and three suffered grievous burns after a major fire broke out on the third floor of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) building here this evening.
Five people were trapped inside the building and taken to Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital, where two were pronounced brought dead, fire officials told UNI.
The deceased were identified as K P Joshi and Satish Kumar, both aged 45.
The injured, Ranveer (48), Pradeep (30) and Om Prakash, were reported to be in a life threatening condition.
The incident occurred at around 1855 hrs, when welding work was going on the building’s third floor. Fourteen fire engines rushed to the spot and a fire fighting exercise began amid heavy presence of police on the scene.
The flames could be brought under control after nearly three hours.
The incident led to a huge traffic jam on Rafi Marg and Parliament Street as it was a rush hour. The fire brigade vehicles had a tough time reaching the CSIR building due to traffic snarl.
Though the rescue operation was hampered by rains, it helped prevent fire from spreading to adjacent buildings.
The cause of fire was under investigation.
