Lucknow, With sparse rainfall lashing few regions of Uttar Pradesh after a long break, the state government today declared 20 arid districts as ‘drought-ridden’.

State Meteorological department said light rains or thundershowers occurred at isolated places in Gorakhpur, Devipatan and Lucknow divisions overnight.

Weather was mainly dry in remaining divisions of the state.

The situation in the state was becoming grim due to a little or no showers. People were facing sultry and muggy weather with power crisis adding to their woes.

Taking note of the serious condition, the state government has identified 20 districts, namely Ballia, Mau, Ghazipur, Basti, Deoria, Sant Kabirnagar, Ambedkar Nagar, Jaunpur, Sultanpur, Rae Bareli, Unnao, Hardoi, Farrukhabad, Mainpuri, Kanpur (Rural), Fatehpur, Kanshi Ram Nagar, Bareilly, Hathras and Kannauj as ”drought-affected”.

The late entry of monsoon and scanty rainfall have hit the paddy production this season, placing the fate of the farmers at stake once again.

Brief rainfall, being now caused with the development of favourable conditions at the Bay of Bengal, has failed to revive the conditions with rivers already drying up.

The absence of required irrigation and agricultural facilities are also a part of the unrelenting problem for the cultivators.

The weather office has, meanwhile, forecast rain or thundershower likely at isolated places in the state.
