Kharif sowing picks up in Gujarat

Ahmedabad, Even as monsoon rains lashed most parts of Gujarat in the last two weeks, 70 per cent sowing of kharif crops was completed in the State, Agriculture Minister Dilipbhai Sanghai said today.

Sowing of paddy has been completed in 51 per cent areas, pulses in 62 per cent, oilseeds in 75 per cent, cotton in 88 per cent , vegetables in 65 per cent and grass in 64 per cent areas.

Till the first week of July, sowing was complete only in 24 lakh hectare area due to delayed monsoon.

But as monsoon picked up momentum, another 60 lakh hectare area was covered by sowing of kharif crops, Mr Sanghani said.
