Donald calls for legalising ball tampering

New Delhi, In a statement which may raise the hackles of the International Cricket Council (ICC), former South African pacer Allan Donald has called for the legalisation of ball tampering in order to check the ever increasing domination of the batsmen.

”The ICC would shoot me for saying it but, with the wickets that we play on and the dying breed fast bowlers are becoming on these flatter wickets, I would say we do need some sort of defence mechanism, something to fall back on to say ‘Right, we can do this.

We can now prepare this ball to go’,” Donald said.

Ball tampering had raised quite a storm during Donald’s time with the Pakistan fast bowlers, in particular, being the prime suspects.

Donald, who is currently the coach of Warwickshire, admitted that several speedsters indulged in tampering in order to get reverse swing.

However, the 42-year-old feels the ICC is unlikely to change the rules of the game anytime soon.

”That (legalising ball-tampering) quite simply would never happen,” Donald told ‘Cricinfo’.
