Kanpur, A mob torched a police station and blocked traffic after a man allegedly died in police custody in Hanspuram police station in Naubasta district here today.
Police had arrested one Jangbahadur, 50, following a complaint filed by a dalit woman accusing him of stealing bricks and had brought him to Hanspuram police station, sources said.
The relatives of the deceased alleged that Jangbahadur died due to torture in custody, a claim that police have been denying.
The sources added that an irate mob blocked the road in Naubasta district by keeping the body of the deceased on road and also torched Hanspuram police station. Five motorcycles belonging to police personnel were also damaged in the fire.
Meanwhile, senior police officers have reached the spot and are trying to pacify the crowd.
However, Jangbahadur’s relatives are adamant on their demand of filing a case against the guilty police personnel and their arrest.
Conidering the tense situation, a large police force has been stationed in the area.
