Gangtok, The Bharatiya Gorkha Parisangh (BGP) has reiterated its appeal to the Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF) government to pass a resolution on creation of a separate state of Gorkhaland during the budget session of the Assembly beginning from next Monday.

”We appeal to the Sikkim government to bring a resolution on Gorkhaland and get it passed in the forthcoming budget session of the Legislative Assembly which begins from July 27,” BGP working president CK Shrestha said here.

The BGP had last year made a similar plea to the SDF government.

It had also conducted an all-party meet of all the political parties, including the ruling SDF in Gangtok same, year, where a resolution was passed to submit a resolution to the SDF government to have the Gorkhaland resolution passed in the Assembly.

While congratulating Chief Minister Pawan Chamling for leading his SDF party to a historic fourth term in the recent Assembly elections, Mr Shrestha said the Gorkhaland resolution would help a lot in creating necessary public opinion in support of the separate state for the Nepali-speaking Indians so as to ensure their distinct identity within the country.

The BGP working president also welcomed the statement of Deputy Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj on Wednesday on the Gorkhaland issue.

Describing this as a positive development, Mr Shrestha said this would go a long way in creating a conducive atmosphere for creation of Gorkhaland. He added that the BGP would also be meeting Sikkim incharge of the Congress Luizinho Faleiro during his visit to Sikkim next week to seek the support of the Congress for a separate Gorkhaland state.
