Agartala, An overcast sky coupled with moderate downpour early today disappointed hundreds of people including students gathered here to watch the longest solar eclipse of the century.
Department of Science and Technology had made arrangements here at Sukanta Academy and science clubs of a few schools of the state distributed solar filters to see the eclipse but bad weather played spoilsport on the occasion.
The VIPs including Science and Technology Minister Joy Gobinda Debroy had gathered on the rooftop of the building while Sukanta Academy authority had brought tripod-mounted telescopes to witness the rare celestial event.
”The eclipse was not visible because of cloud cover followed by rain though the of visibility range was about 92 per cent in the state and the sun was about eight degrees above the horizon during the eclipse,” said Mr Debroy.
Meanwhile, some NGOs had also made arrangements to show the rare celestial event live from 5.30 am on large LCD screens.
The weathermen had predicted the sky would be generally cloudy and light rainfall might occur in one or two places.
”A low pressure in the North Bay of Bengal was preventing the monsoon flow into Northeast, resulting in the dominance of hot air and it might continue for another two weeks,” they said.
