Srinagar, The defence authorities released and handed over to police a soldier of Territorial Army (TA) Ashiaq Hussain Peer, accused of killing a girl in the frontier district of Kupwara yesterday.
A Defence Ministry spokesman today said that Peer, a local of Tregham has been serving in 160 TA Battalion in Kupwara.
He was allegedly involved in the death of Amina Masoodi of Tregham as per initial reports.
The Spokesman said the Army released him from service and handed him over to the police for a fair trial within four hours of the case being brought to the notice of the Army.
He said this was yet another instance of the Army taking expeditious action against any soldier being allegedly involved in any human rights abuse.
He said Peer and victim, both locals, studied together in government Higher Secondary School at Tregham and were reportedly in touch with each other.
This is thus a purely individual issue and the Army, as an institution, has nothing to do with his subsequent actions on the individual’s personal front, he said.
However, the separatists, including breakaway Hurriyat Conference (HC) questioned the Army’s sincerity and said why hundreds of other soldiers involved in custodial disappearance, fake encounters, rape and tortures were not being handed over to local authorities to bring them to justice.
They said the killers of Human Right activist and senior advocate Jaleel Indrabi were still at large though they were identified and a non-bailable warrant has been issued by a local court here against them through Interpol.
