Bangalore, Indian Council of Agricultural Science Deputy Director General (Crop Science) S K Datta today called for alternative use of tobacco in new fields like pharmaceutical industries and production of oil from seeds.

Dr Datta, in his inaugural address at a workshop on improvement of different types of tobacco, said the US and other European countries were already using tobacco for research in medical field as it has all bio-components like enzymes and vaccines.

India should explore the possibility of entering into collaboration with these countries in research and development, he said, adding, the use of tobacco in new fields would help farmers to fetch better price.

Farmers in Karnataka have a competitive edge as they produce the best quality of tobacco, he believed.

The latest use of its seeds for production of edible oil has met with great success with no side effects, he added.
