Chennai, The Indian Railways would introduce biometric technology for operating trains instead of the present conventional system of using keys, Minister of State For Railways E Ahamed said today.
Talking to reporters after inaugurating an automatic ticket vending machine at Egmore Railway Station here, he said under the biometric technology, the thumb impression of the driver would be taken as biometric idenfication for operating trains.
The proposed system assumed significance in the wake of the recent hijacking of a suburban Electrical Multiple Unit (EMU) by an unidentified man.
The miscreant, using the keys found in the driver’s cabin, hijacked the train and rammed it into a goods train. Four people, including the miscreant, were killed.
