Aurangabad, Maharashtra, The Geological Survey of India (GSI), in its study of water seepages and damage caused to the world famous heritage sites, has spotted 393 vulnerable blocks in Ajanta and 100 in Ellora Caves.
GSI director General, P M Tejale, after submitting report of the study to Archeological Survey of India (ASI) yesterday, told newsmen that rocks of Ajanta and Ellora Caves are thousands of years old, and have been weakened by the pernicious effect of different weather conditions over all these years, stressing the need for protecting them.
The GSI was entrusted with carrying out a detailed study of the monuments and suggesting remedies. It took a good 10 years to complete the study and submitted its report yesterday.
The measures suggested for their revival included removing of shops and houses from the foothills of the caves, disallowing vehicles near the heritage sites, banning photography inside the caves and building wall to avoid the damage being caused by Waghur river.
Mr Tejale said the GSI has also suggested several plan of action to stop water seepage into the caves. ”If the government implements these suggestions, the life of world heritage sites will certainly be increased by at least 200 years,” he claimed.
