Karur, Jan 12  Tension prevailed as a section of villagers, led by Krishnarayapuram MLA Kamaraj, Kulithalai MLA Manickam and Karur District DMK Secretary Vasuki Murugasen today resorted to a rail-roko at Lalapet railway station near here in protest against the closure of level crossing at Lalapet.

Police said the Salem Divisiion of Southern Railway had closed the level crossing in view of the opening of a new railway over bridge (RoB) yesterday in that area.

However, the agitators from about 40 adjoining villages, assembled at the railway station and resorted to rail roko, demanding that the existing level crossing be kept open, in adition to the new RoB.

They demanded that Railway Minister Lalu Prasad should instruct the officials concerned immediately in this regard.

Following the stir, the Erode-Tiruchirapalli passenger train was affected.

Ms Murugasen told newspersons that Union Minister for Shipping, Highways and Road transport T R Baalu, who inaugurated the RoB, had assured that he would take up the matter with the Railway Minister.

She appeled to the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi to take up the issue with the Centre to ensure that the existing level crossing at Lalapet be kept open for the benefit of the villagers.
