New Delhi, Jan 12Â Â The All India Motor Transport Congress (AIMTC) today called off their eight-day nationwide strike unconditionally after an agreement with the Government.
”The AIMTC withdraws the strike unconditionally. Transport services shall be restored forthwith,” a resolution signed by the representatives of the Road Transport and Highways Ministry and the AIMTC said.
Briefing reporters after the meeting with State transport ministers and the AIMTC, where the agreement was hammered out, Union Transport Minister T R Baalu said the Government had agreed to release all the 32 arrested union leaders, except those who had criminal cases against them.
As part of the agreement, a committee would be set up to look into the issues relating to the national permit system and rationalisation of motor vehicles taxes.
The committee, headed by Union Transport Secretary Brahm Dutt, would submit its report within eight weeks.
It would also have representatives from the finance and transport departments of various State Governments and Union Territories, besides four members of the AIMTC, Mr Baalu said.
It was also decided that a standing committee would be constituted both by the Centre and the State Governments as a permanent mechanism for the redressal of the grievances of the transporters.
On the demand for reduction in diesel prices, the AIMTC was informed that an appropriate decision would be taken by the highest authority– the Union Cabinet– after considering all aspects.
